A person who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to children at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual crimes against two young males both nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and one adult experienced illness at the facility in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Yet, he disputed one particular crime he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, prosecuting, described the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer program which he managed.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior stated, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were settling down and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the man had engaged in this activity with the boys "for many years", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his stepchild had suspicions about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to examine in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel stated objects including lubricant, ointment and injection devices were located, and his family member contacted the authorities about his suspicions.

She explained the defendant continued to engage in the "candy game" with six youngsters that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The prosecutor stated the minors were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson contacted the authorities again.

She stated the defendant then played the "candy game" in a room of five children.
