Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
